メールで議論ができるか？
今では、名刺にメールアドレスが入っていることは珍しくなく
なった。また、携帯電話からもメールの送受信ができるように
なったこともあって、非常に身近なツールになってきた。企業の
中でも、メールで通知や、メーリング・リストと言われる複数の
人に同時にメールが送ることのできる仕掛けを使って、いろいろ
な情報のやり取りをしていることも多い。そして、”電話など使
わずに伝えることができるので、非常に便利になった。”といっ
た声も聞かれる。
しかし、敢えて否定的なことを言うようだが、はたしてメール
で議論というのは可能なのだろうか？ できると言い切る人も
いるが、しかし、本当にそうなのだろうか？筆者の経験で言うと、
議論するのは、非常に難しいと感じている。
１対１ならまだしも、複数人になった場合には、メーリング・
リストを使って、同時に関係ある人たちにメールが送られても、
本当に読んでいるのか確認できないという問題がある。（読んだ
かどうかの確認メールを送るようにすればいいのではないか？と
いう意見もあるが、メールを”開いた”という事実は分かっても、
読んだかどうかは不明のままだ。）どこかに集まっての打ち合わ
せであれば、人の話を聞いているのか、みんが興味を持っている
のか、それとも、上の空なのかなど、”空気”を読むことができる。
そして、なんとなく理解されていないなと感じれば、”繰り返し
になりますが...”と、再度説明したり、別の説明の仕方をする
など、対処できる。メールでは、なかなか難しい問題だ。
また、メールの場合、面倒なのが、”出張だったので数日間の
メールが読めていなかったのですが、最初の方にあった○○につい
ては、異論があります”といった議論の蒸し返しが簡単に起きてし
まうということである。リアルな（？）会議であったなら、３０分
ほど遅れてきた人が、最初から説明してくれと言い出して、議論が
進まないのと同じである。
さらに、現状のメールで決定的に欠点なのが、”文章”で伝えな
ければならないことである。理路整然と文章が書ける人であれば、
問題ないだろうが、誰しもがそうはいかない。特に、感情的になって
いる場合の文章など、支離滅裂になってしまい、何を言いたいのか
分からない文章になり、それに刺激されて、さらに反論する人が出て
くると、もう、何を議論しているのか分からなくなってしまう。
確かに便利なメールではあるが、使い方を考えて利用しないと、
逆に非効率な、そして、無意味な議論をしてしまうことになるので
注意すべきだろう。
