地球に優しくないパソコン
”パソコン１台製造、資源消費1.8トン”。この記事を目に
した読者もいるかと思う。国連大学の研究発表によると、
パソコンを１台製造するのに燃料や水、化学物質が1.8トンも
必要になるという結論が出たそうだ。省資源とか省エネと
叫ばれる中で、これはどういうことなのだろうか？
今回は、この記事に着目してみたい。
筆者は、もう二十年ほど前に環境問題のことを調べていた
ことがあるが、分別したり、再利用しようとすると、その為に
大量のエネルギーを消費するという事実を知って、愕然とした
ことがある。考えてみれば、当たり前なのだが、再生紙などに
しても、それを回収するために車が走り回り、その再生紙を
溶かすために大量の水が消費され、さらに、白くするためには、
印刷インクを洗い落としたり、漂白剤を使わなければならなく
なる。そこで消費されるエネルギーや、出てくる汚水の処理を
考えると、本当に再生紙がいいことなのかどうなのかが分から
なくなってしまうのである。（ただ、再生紙をダンボールなど
にするという方法で、漂白剤などの薬品を少なくすることも
あるが、大量の水を消費するのは変わりない。）
ITの中に使われているICチップの製造などには、エネルギーを
大量に必要とするものが多い。非常に貴重な金属が使われている
部品が多いので、その材料を作るためにそもそも大量のエネルギー
が消費されていく。また、微細設計であることからも、クリーン
ルームなどその設備にも、いろいろな資源や大量のエネルギーを
必要とする。
パソコンは、小さなスペースで、大量の情報を扱うことができ、
さらに、紙媒体を必要としないなど、パソコン自体からは、
ごみなどでないクリーンなイメージがあるかもしれないが、実は、
その製造において、大量の資源を消費し、さらに、廃棄に関しては、
もっと大きなエネルギーを必要とする。CPUのパッケージの素材は、
非常に高温にも耐える物質なので、廃棄処分という観点からすると、
非常に壊しにくい物質であり、その中に貴金属が入っているのでは
あるが、非常に取り出しにくい構造になっている。
先の国連大学の発表によると、このままでは、ITが進み大量の
PCが生産されていくことによって、莫大なエネルギーが消費され、
その結果、地球温暖化や化学物質汚染の要因になる可能性がある
としている。
しかし、その一方で、それだからこそ、ITによる経済効果も
大きいと考えられるのであり、国連大学のレポートは、非常に
難しい問題を提起している。
ITを推し進めていくことが、本当にいいことなのか、こういう
視点からも検証する必要が出てきているのかもしれない。
