ホームページを持つときに選ぶべきサービス業者は？
筆者は、個人のホームページを立ち上げて10年近くになる。
もっとも、その間、いろいろな紆余曲折があるが、momotarou.com
というドメインを一貫して使っている。そのため、いろいろな方
から、ホームページを作りたいのだが、どこのサービスがいいのかと
アドバイスを求められることが多い。そこで、今回は、ホスティング・
サービスのポイントについて考えてみたい。
まず、独自ドメインサービスを使うかどうかという選択がある。
ホームページを開設するだけなら、URLがはっきりすればいいだけ
なので、どんなものでもいいかもしれない。しかし、ホームページは
見てもらえなければ、意味が無い。その為には、URLをタイプして
もらう必要があり、その場合、分かりにくいURLだと打ち間違えたり、
打ち込む気にもならない。なので、企業では、独自ドメインを取得
して、覚えられやすい名前にしたり、商品名にしている場合が多い。
最近は、映画の宣伝用サイトを作る場合は、映画のタイトルを
そのままドメインにしているケースが増えている。
また、独自ドメインを取得することのメリットは、覚えてもらえる
だけでなく、メールアドレスやURLが、変わらないというメリットが
ある。そうすれば、それを使い続けることで、ブランド力を持つことに
なるのである。ちなみに、筆者のドメインmomotarou.comは、ずっと
使っているので、何年も連絡の無かった昔の知人から、メールが来る
ことがある。企業のメールを使っていると、これはありえない話だ。
（ちなみに、筆者のホームページでは、『生涯同一ドメイン宣言』と
いうのをやっている。）
ドメインを持つことのメリットは、これだけでなく、プロバイダーを
変更する場合にも有効である。また、プロバイダーを変えなくても、
プロバイダーが買収されたり、合併することもあり、独自ドメインを
使っていないと、プロバイダー名が変わることでURLが変わってしまう
のである。しかし、独自ドメインを持っていれば、そんなことは関係なく、
同じドメインで使える。実際、筆者の個人のホームページは、今までに
何度もプロバイダーが変わっているが、それに気がついている人は、
ほとんどいない。
それでは、ホスティング・サービスを選ぶのに、どんなプロバイダーを
選べばいいのだろうか？ Yahoo！で検索すると、独自ドメインの使える
プロバイダーは、数え切れないほどあり、また、そのサービス料金も、
千円以下のものから、何万、あるいは、十数万といったものまでと開きが
ありすぎる。サービス内容を読んでも、何がどうなのやらさっぱり分から
ないのではないだろうか？
ここで、選ぶ場合の検討内容を見ておきたい。単に金額を選ぶのでは
なく、どういう目的で使うのかを考えて選びたい。
１）商用利用が可能か？
プロバイダーによっては、安いサービスの場合、商用利用を許して
いないものがある。しっかりと約款を読んで、注意しておきたい。
特に、オンラインで何かを販売しようと思うなら、この点は要注意だ。
２）メールアドレスは複数持つことができるか？
メールアドレスなど１つでいいのではないか？と思われるかもしれ
ないが、問い合わせ用のメールアドレスや、サポート用など用途に
よって使い分けが必要になることもあるので、後で慌てないように
したい。
３）掲示板などを使うのか？
掲示板などの機能を使う予定が最初からあるのなら、そういう
サービスがオプションで使えるものを選んでおくほうがいいだろう。
掲示板だけを無償、あるいは、非常に低料金で使えるサービスもある
ので、そこへリンクするという方法もあるが、無償で使えるものの
大半は、広告が入っていて、もし、ビジネス用途で使うなら、その
バナーに競合になるような企業の名前が出てきたりしたら、洒落に
ならない。
４）サポート体制は？
安いサービスは、メールだけの対応になっていたり、ホームページ
からしか質問を受け付けないといったこともある。また、電話で
受け付けてくれても、遠い場所にあると、電話代も馬鹿にならなくなる。
と、いろいろと調べないといけないのだが、あまりよく分からないと
いう場合は、名前の知られているプロバイダーのサービスを利用する
ことをお勧めする。例えば、Nifty、Biglobe、OCN、ODNなどである。
これらのプロバイダーは、多くのユーザを抱えているので、それだけ
ユーザ対応のノウハウを持っており、ホームページを見ても情報量が
多いから、初心者でも安心して使えるはずである。
今後、SOHOや個人事業者でもドメインを持っていることが大きな
メリットになってくるので、検討してみるべきではないだろうか？
