レンタル・サーバ、ホスティング・サービスの選び方
前回までは、ホームページを作る前に考えなければいけない
ことを書いてきた。今回は、いよいよホームページを実際に
開設するのに必要なレンタル・サーバやホスティング・サービス
について、考えてみよう。
まず、ホームページの業者にサーバを借りるのに、いろいろな
言い方があって、混乱することがあるので、一般的な定義を
はっきりさせておく。
＜レンタル・サーバ＞
これは、サーバ機器を１台、まるごと借りることを意味する。
１台借りるので、価格が高くなるが、ある意味、なんでもできる。
店舗で言えば、一戸建ての建物で店舗にする、ビルを１棟丸々
借りることを意味している。そうすれば、営業時間を何時にする
のも自由だし、店舗内のレイアウトも自由に変更できる。
＜ホスティング・サービス＞
１台のサーバ機の中のハードディスクを複数のユーザで利用する
ことで、その中の一部を使うことになる。それ故に、提供されて
いる機能しか利用することができないが、価格は格段に安くなる。
テナントビルの一室を借りるようなことになるので、夜１０時まで
営業したいと言ったところで、１階のエントランスが夜８時に
閉まってしまえば、どうにもならない。看板をエントランスに出し
たいと言っても、オーナーの許可が出なければ、それもできなくなる。
さて、どっちがいいのか？という話になると、最初は、ホスティ
ング・サービスをお勧めする。サーバ１台借りても、そこまで使い
こなせないからだ。世の中のほとんどの企業はホスティング・サー
ビスを利用しているし、機能が制限されているといっても、通常の
サービス等では、不便に感じることはないだろう。それと、当然だが、
ホスティングの場合は、他のユーザもいるので、全体をホスティング・
サービス業者が管理をしている（実際のテナントビルに管理会社の
警備の人がいるようなものである）から、安心できるだろう。
さて、ホスティングというキーワードで業者を調べると、とんでも
なく多くの企業があることに驚くだろう。そして、無料のものから、
月々数万円といったものまであり、その価格差に驚くかもしれない。
この金額の違いだが、だいたい下記のようなことで決まってくるようだ。
＜無料のもの＞
自動的に広告が入る。ある一定の期間、データ更新がされないと、
使っていないとみなされて削除される。使える機能が少ない。
データ容量が少ない。メールサービスはついていないものが多い。
＜有料のもの＞
広告が入ることは無い。料金を支払っていれば、ずっと使える。
メールは最低でも１つは使えるようになっている。オプションに
なっていることが多いが、クレジット決済機能を使ったり、Webで
申し込みページを簡単に作れるようになっているものもある。
どんなビジネスをするかにもよるが、広告がついてくるものは、
どんな広告が入るのかを気をつけていないと、競合相手の広告が
入ったり、あまり、自社の製品の紹介と不釣合いな広告が出てくる
こともあるので注意が必要だ。例えば、子供用の学習教材を売って
いるのに、ローンや中古車の広告が出てくると、見ている側は、
すごく違和感を感じてしまう。
また、一番、注意しないといけないことは、”商用利用が可能か？”
ということである。これは、無料、有料に関わらず、商用利用を
禁止しているところもあるので、折角、ホームページを作っても、
契約違反ということで、削除されてしまうと、どうしようもない。
単にホームページが消えるだけでなく、急にホームページがなくなる
ことから、お客の信用が消えてしまうことになる。申し込む前に、
必ず、制約事項を確認し、不明な場合は、問い合わせして確認する
ことが必要だ。
ビジネスをするのだから、この点だけは、どんなに面倒でも確認を
しておくべきだろう。先の店舗の例えで言えば、賃貸契約してから、
居住用途以外に使えないということに気づくようなものである。
ぜひ、頭に留めておいて欲しい。
