確実には届かないメール
当たり前のように名刺に入っているメールアドレス。まるで、
電話番号のような顔をしているが、電話と違い、確実に相手に
届くものではない。この現実を忘れているようなことが多くて、
ゾッとすることがある。今回は、そんな電話とメールの違いを、
もう一度、考えてみよう。
普段、何気なく使っている電話とメールだが、その運営や構成は
あまりにも大きな差がある。電話は、ご存知の通り、全国に電話
回線が引かれ、さらに、公衆回線網に関しては、NTT１社が管理・
運営している。（と、書くと、NTTでなくても電話回線を引き込む
ことができるぞって話もあるが、そこは、一般的ではないので、
考えないことにする。）となると、当然ながら、電話がつながら
ないとか、間違い電話が多いから番号を変えてくれといったことは、
すべてNTT１社が引き受けるので、責任の所在がはっきりしている。
また、１社で管理しているからこそ、電話番号案内や、電話帳と
いうものを提供できる。
ところが、インターネットとなると、プロバイダーは、何十社もあり、
どこを選んでいいのかよく分からないし、最近のADSLとなると、
NTTのアナログ回線の電話＋ADSLキャリア業者＋プロバイダーという
契約で、こんな構造はユーザには理解できない。言い換えれば、
水道を使うのに、水道管を管理している会社と、水道水を管理して
いる会社、そして、浄水場を管理している会社に別々に契約をする
というようなことで、こんな面倒な話は明らかに変である。
話をメールに戻す。まずは、メールの仕組みを、おさらいしておくと、
１）目の前にあるパソコンでメールを書いて、『送信』すると、
契約しているプロバイダーのサーバへメールが送られる。
２）そのサーバから、送り先のメール・サーバに向けてメールが
送られる。この時、相手が同じプロバイダーならプロバイダーの
内部でのデータのやりとりになるが、相手先が別のプロバイダーと
なると、次々といろいろなプロバイダーのサーバを経由して、
メールが送られていく。
３）相手先の契約しているプロバイダーのメール・サーバに蓄え
られる。
４）相手がパソコンで『受信』をすることで、相手のパソコンに
データが送られ表示される。
というステップになる。
さて、ここで、面倒なのは、２）でいろいろなサーバを経由して
いくことで、この途中でトラブルがあると、メールが紛失してしまう
ことが起きる。つまり、出したのに届かないのだ。
郵便の葉書や封書でも同じようなことが起きることが、極まれに
あるが、その場合は、先の電話と同じように責任元が明確なので、
誰に対して調べてくれと言えばいいのかはっきりするし、本当に
大事な書類なら、書留で送るという方法もある。
しかし、メールの場合は、プロバイダーの内部のことなら調べる
ことはできるが、別のプロバイダーを経由している場合は、もう、
どこで何が起きているかを調べ始めると膨大な労力を要するし、
調べられないこともある。
１０年ほど前は、実際に筆者もメールが途中で消えてなくなると
いう経験を数回したことがある。途中のサーバの管理がまずかったり
すると、履歴もとっていなかったり、バックアップをしていないと
いったこともあるので、本当にどこに行ったのか分からなくなるのだ。
いろいろと改善されてきて、サーバや回線の品質も上がってきて
いるが、基本中の基本であるプロトコル（通信の手順）については、
インターネットの初期のころから何も変わっていない。そう、途中で
メールが消えてもおかしくない状況の中で使っているのである。
そして、いろいろなサーバを経由していることもあって、どこで
消えてしまったのかはっきりしないケースもあるということだ。
脅かすつもりはないが、頭の片隅にでも、覚えておいて欲しい
のは、メールが消えたり、届かないことがあった場合、責任の所在
（ようするにクレームする相手）が存在しないケースがありうる
ということである。そんな危うい構造の上でビジネスをしていると
いうことは、ちょっと気にしておいてもいいだろう。
