データの視点、パラメータの視点
目薬のTVコマーシャル。資料をプロジェクターで表示し、阿部寛が、
「これじゃよく分からないよ...」。すると、プレゼンしている人が、
「では、もっと詳しく..」と、画面いっぱいに細かな数字を表示する...
このコマーシャルを見ていて、大量の『データ』を扱うことで混乱
していることがあるのではないかと考えてしまった。
コンピュータの世界では、データとパラメータというものがある。
どちらも数字なのだが、ものすごい違いがある。この見方で、
ITビジネスの考え方がちょっと変わってくるのではないかと思う。
今回は、これについて考えてみよう。
データは、説明するまでもないだろう。例えば、在庫一覧に書かれた
数字や、会計簿に書かれたさまざまな数字、そして、名簿の電話番号
などなど、いろいろなものがある。
一方、パラメータという数値もある。パソコンのソフトなどで、
ごく稀ではあるが、パラメータを設定してくださいということがあり、
０とか１とか、数字を入れたりする。
さて、このパラメータ。一体、何なのか？
パラメータは、制御を行うもので、分かりやすく言えば、信号の、
”赤”、”青”みたいなものである。単に、赤、青だと、データだが、
これを信号の色で考えると、赤＝止まれ、青＝進めという『行動』が
伴うようになる。このように、いろいろな動きや処理の流れを決める
のがパラメータだ。
さて、このデータとパラメータは、コンピュータエンジニアなどは、
当然のように区別をしていて、意識もしていないほど当たり前なの
だが、これは、なかなか一般の人にはわかりにくい。いや、分かり
にくいだけでなく、データとして見ているのか、パラメータとして
見ているのかで、ぜんぜん、ビジネスの見え方が異なる。どうも、
できるビジネスマンは、パラメータとして見ているようなのである。
例えば、月次の売上集計を毎月眺めていても、データとして眺めて
いるだけでは、売れたとか、売れ悩んでるとしか見えていない。
ところが、個々の数字が、パラメータだという視点で見ると、
どうなるか？ そうすると、個々の数字が、”利益”という結果を
左右する動きを示しているという視点に切り替わる。そうなると、
どのパラメータが上下することで、より大きな利益を出せるのか、
そのパラメータに関連する業務での”動き”は何かを考えることで、
利益に本当に供与している業務は何か、効率の悪い業務はどこなのか
が見えてくる。
つまり、数字の変化があるということを見ているだけでなく、その
後ろにある業務までもが見えてくるのである。実は、ここにITビジネス
の本質の一つがあり、コンピュータを使うことで、より多くの数字を
解析し、パラメータとして見ることで、何を改善すればいいのか、
何が足りないのかが、具体的な業務と結びつけて考えることができる
のである。
このように、単なる数字の羅列と見ているのか、それとも、"動き"
を伴ったパラメータとして見るかによって、さまざまなものが違って
見えてくるだろう。ぜひ、データとパラメータという２つの視点で
数字を見て欲しい。
